Why You Need a Hardware Wallet

In the world of cryptocurrency, "Not your keys, not your coins" is the golden rule. Exchanges can be hacked, and software wallets can be compromised by malware.

Offline Storage

Ledger devices store your private keys offline, making them immune to online hacks and malware that target software wallets. Your keys never leave the device.

Full Ownership

When you use a Ledger, you have complete control over your assets. No third party can freeze your funds or deny you access to your money.

Step-by-Step

Getting Started with Ledger

Follow this comprehensive guide to set up your device securely. Do not skip any steps, especially regarding your recovery phrase.

1

Download Ledger Live

Navigate to the official Ledger website and download the Ledger Live application for your desktop or mobile device. This software is the bridge between your device and the blockchain.

Warning: Only download from ledger.com. Never use third-party links.

2

Initialize Your Device

Connect your Ledger Nano S Plus, Nano X, or Stax to your computer using the provided USB cable. Follow the on-screen instructions on the device to set up a PIN code.

Your PIN code is the first line of defense. Choose a code that is not easily guessable (avoid 1234 or 0000).

3

Write Down Your Recovery Phrase

This is the most critical step. Your device will display a 24-word recovery phrase. Write these words down on the recovery sheet provided in the box.

NEVER take a photo of this phrase. NEVER type it into a computer or phone. NEVER share it with anyone, including Ledger support.

4

Install Apps & Add Accounts

Open Ledger Live and use the Manager tab to install apps for the cryptocurrencies you wish to hold (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). Once the app is installed on your device, you can add an account in Ledger Live to start receiving funds.

Security Best Practices

Owning a hardware wallet is the first step, but your behavior is just as important. Here are the golden rules of crypto security:

  • Verify the device: Ensure your Ledger is genuine by checking it with Ledger Live.
  • Check the screen: Always verify transaction details on the physical device screen, not just your computer monitor.
  • Keep it private: Your 24-word recovery phrase is the master key. Anyone who has it has your money.
  • Beware of phishing: Ledger will never ask for your 24 words. If an email or website asks for them, it is a scam.
